A wide variety of prize-awarding activities are often held in press circles, in the hope of a comprehensive examination are done at an appropriate time on the press practice of the previous stage. Standardized news-awarding activities can reflect the news practice of the main stream in the press. And the choice of good works not only embodies the approval and cast of news value, but also represents the ideology and value preference of the main stream in this industry. All these are major standards in measuring the entire level of the press. In addition, news-awarding activities can promote the formation of healthy competitive system and encouragement system in press circles. But in the practical operation of news-awarding, there are numerous phenomena which affect the justice and authority of news-awarding, for example, there are too many prize items, the prize-awarding process is not transparent enough, and the composition of the judges are not reasonable. What are the problems in China's news-awarding practice? What system should the press establish to ensure the justice of the prize-awarding activities? This paper selects China's news award as a typical case, illustrates the development of prize-awarding system of China's press, and holds that there are some problems in the prize-awarding process: first, the prize items are irregularly set, second, the prize-awarding process is not transparent enough and the formation of judges is not reasonable, third, the professional requirement is not stressed and the system lags behind. This paper analyses the factors affecting present news awarding system, including political, economical and technological factors and traditional thoughts and cultures, and investigates the reasons for the formation of this system by applying the theories of media-ecology and modernity. Meanwhile, this paper contrasts the famous news-awarding at home and abroad, and put forward four proposals to improve China's news-awarding system i.e, to establish broad news-assessing union, to lay out professional news-awarding standards, to set reasonable prize items, and to reasonably optimize the procedures of news-awarding.
