Wireless Ad hoc networks are a new type of networks in which a collection of mobile terminals with wireless transmitters cooperate with each other. It is an important part in the research area of wireless communication. Due to its easiness of construction and host mobility, wireless Ad hoc networks will be widely used in the real world. However, for the inherent features of this type of networks, it suffers more security threat than conventional networks, and the security of wireless Ad hoc networks is receiving increasing attention. In this paper, we firstly have a generalization on Ad hoc network. Then we give an introduction for the basic knowledge on key management and summarize the recent research situation on mobile group key management comprehensively. Based on these, we have an intensive research on the ad hoc network security which focuses on the key management. We put forward the three-layered key management framework which is in accordance with the clustering network topology. It stresses the group key rekeying procedure when there is a dynamic group, computing the communication cost needed. There are some kinds of ways to cover the changing situation, such as centralized way, distributed way and the combined way. We choose the prospective two ways and have an intensive analysis. When the group node joins, leaves and moves, the steps of the group changing are described specifically. Meantime, it includes the factors which are related to the total communication cost, such as the divided situation of the nodes in every cluster on the different level, and the number of the gateway node. Finally, the simulation results demonstrate that the three-layered key management scheme achieves more perfect communication cost when comparing to the two-layered key management scheme under the same definition.
