In recent years, MANET multicast technology is developing rapidly, followed by more attention on security issues. Due to unique characteristics of MANET, it is more vulnerable to security threats than the traditional network. And in addressing security issues, group key management is the priority point, but those key management schemes, which are commonly used in traditional network group, can't be directly applied in MANET network. Therefore, designing a safe and efficient group key management scheme for MANET affects technology development and application of MANET multicast. In this paper, MANET and multicast communication network are systematic studied. What's more, problems and final goals of the security issue in MANET are analyzed as well. Focus on the widely used elliptic curve cryptography in key management areas, analyze the elliptic curve discrete logarithm problem. Based on the analysis of the three types of key management scheme for MANET group, advantages and disadvantages of them are discussed in the contest of MANET network. This paper proposed a new elliptic curve cryptography based hierarchical group key management, which combines the distributed and hierarchical group key management schemes. This proposed scheme retains the good extensibility of the traditional hierarchical, and effectively solves the single point failure problem. This article discusses the group key generation and protocol updating in detail, and proofs the validity and security of protocol. In the performance analysis section, comparison with the existing scheme is made in the communication overhead, computational overhead and storage overhead respectively. Finally analyze delay and the success rate of the group key update algorithm using OPNET simulation software, which effectively verifies the safety and efficiency of the proposed scheme, which is more suitable for MANET networks.
