The research work of this paper is supported by grants from National Basic Research Program of China, "Basic Research on Integrated Optoelectronic Devices and Microstructure Optical Fibers with Structure and Technology Innovations for Future Advanced Optical Communications" (2003CB314900).Photonic integrated devices have become the research focus in the field of optical communication and optoelectronics for their smaller size, lower cost, higher performance, and more stable operation comparing with discrete devices. To advance PICs (Photonic Integrated Circuits) technology, one is to improve process capability of semiconductor, the other is to seek new structure and put it into practice. Ring resonator has the potential application in high-density and large-scale PICs in the future with its small size, simple structure and multiple functions realizable, and which is particularly suited for monolithic integration with other components. In this thesis, the characteristics of single-ring and series-double-ring resonators were theoretically analyzed, and the InP/InGaAsP-multilayer-structure ring resonator was designed in detail, of which fabrication and process using wet etching were also discussed. The main work is listed as follows:1. The main PICs technologies applied in the present were summarized and the principle, characteristics, and application of ring resonator and multimode interference (MMI) were also described in detail.2. The power loss coefficient of MMI coupler was introduced to modify the transfer matrix. Based on the modified transfer matrix method, MMI-coupled ring resonator in such two structures including single- ring and series-double-ring have been analyzed, meanwhile the parameters such as loss coefficient, effective index, and radius of ring waveguide and the loss coefficient and coupling efficiency of MMI coupler which have effect on output frequency response have been discussed.3. The waveguide structure and its epitaxial layers were designed to realize single-mode operation, insensitive-polarization, and high efficiency coupling with single-mode fiber. In order to get arbitrary coupling efficiency of MMI coupler, various design methods have been contrasted to optimize whole device's performance.4. The device's structure was formed by selective chemical wet etching technique. Proper solutions were chosen to etch various materials of epitaxial layer, and then the ridge was form by photolithographically designed and wet etching according to the etch time we have tested before, finally the possible reason were found for the results from the experiment.
