Huang Shi was a great master in the year of Daoguang of Qing Dynasty. He is world-famous for his compilation "Research on Huang Shi's Compilation", which established his position in Qing Confucianist Compilation and was praised highly by scholars.From recent years research on Huang Shi, some achievements have been made. But up to till now, there have been no scholars studying Huang Shi's Compilation Rhyming Dictionaries, which shows there is much room to study Huang Shi.This paper takes a crack at the studying point where Huang Shi's Compilation includes Sui and Tang Compilation rhyming dictionaries of 6 dynasties of Wei and Jin. The author has systematically summed up and concluded Huang Shi's Compilation rhyming dictionaries so as to attain the goal of finishing this task. That is on the basis of overall analyzing the contents, materials, styles, achievements and success and failure of Huang Shi Compilation rhyming dictionaries to finally investigate China's early rhyming dictionaries existing forms and changing processes, to promote the theory study of Chinese phonology and to correctly assess the achievements. The paper is composed of introduction, 5 chapters of main body and conclusion.In the part of introduction, the author outlines Huang Shi's life story and the sorts of his compilation dictionaries, which directs us to target the object and material of the study. The author analyzes the present situation of the research on Huang Shi's compilation rhyming dictionaries, points out clearly the necessity, feasibility of the research on the task, discusses about the value of Huang Shi's compilation rhyming dictionaries, makes clear the purpose of the study and finally expounded the thinking and ways of study. That is to comply with the principle of combing document arrangement with monographic study of rhyming dictionaries, compilation theory with compilation practice and also use document study method, comparison study method, statistics method and diagram method, etc.Chapter I is about the compilation of "Research on Huang Shi's Compilation". It consists of 4 sections: section 1 explains time background of Huang Shi's Compilation; section 2 outlines the process of compilation; section 3 introduces editions of "Research on Huang Shi's Compilation"; section 4, which is more important, deals with the compilation introducing other Qing Confucianist scholars' compilations. Besides Huang, Ren Dachun, Ma Guohan and Gu ZHenfu of Qing Dynasty also compiled rhyming dictionaries. But they had their own contents and characteristics and gave detailed explanations which serve as a foreshadowing for the comparison study of later chapters and sections.Chapter II is about the material origin of Huang Shi's compilation rhyming dictionaries. It's made up of 4 sections: section 1 is about collecting compilation materials from reference books; section 2 is about collecting compilation materials from noted books of ancient times; section 3 is about collecting compilation materials from wordbook; section 4 is about the analysis of Huang Shi's compilation materials which is the key part of this chapter. The material origins summed up have 3 common characteristics: the first is that all quoted ancient materials contain compilation of compilation rhyming dictionaries; the second is that lots of sound meaning materials are quoted in the book, and most of which are from the times of Tang and song Dynasties or before Wei and Jin Dynasties, and they are close to the time of deceased compilation rhyming dictionaries; the third is that the documents are the sources for later scholars to study the explanations of words in ancient books and records and especially for compiling ancient books.Chapter III is about the contents of Huang Shi's compilation which is the key part of this chapter. It consists of 4 sections: section 1 outlines the deceased condition of the rhyming dictionaries and lets us know the value of Huang Shi's compilation rhyming dictionaries and divides the dictionaries into 3 periods--Wei and Jin dynasties, Sui and Tang dynasties and cards every content that Huang Shi made in the field of compilation rhyming dictionary; section 2 makes a systematic exposition of the characteristics of Wei and Jin dynasties compilations from the aspects of word distinguishing, phonetic notation and explanation, such as "Phonology" by Li Deng, and "Rhyming Collections" by Lu Jing. This includes 3 points: the first is to distinguish the word form so as to correctly explain language; the second is kinds of phonetic notations and the third is about so many word meaning explanations and the contents are very important; section3 explains clearly compilation characteristics of 6 dynasties' rhyming dictionaries such as "Outline of Rhyme" by Yang Xiuzhi and "Sound Chart" by Li Kai. It pays much attention to explanations of words in ancient books, and the explanations and brief and direct; section 4 systematically analyzes Sui and Tang dynasties rhyming dictionary—"Tang Rhyme" by Sun Mian, and "Qie Rhyme" by Li Zhou, and distinguishes the relations between "Research on Sun's Rhyming Dictionary" and Shuo Weijiezi Zhan Yun Pu and finally sums up 3 characteristics of Huang Shi's compilation rhyming dictionaries: the first is that the length of writing is different and pays much attention to phonetic notation and explanation; the second is to use the methods of previous scholars for copy and arrangement of rhyming dictionaries; the third is to capture the developing trend of early rhyming dictionaries.Chapter IV is about the style of Huang Shi's compilation rhyming dictionaries. This is the key part of this chapter. From the aspect of self compilation style and Huang Shi's compilation rhyming dictionaries style, the author of this paper concludes the characteristics of rhyming dictionaries, styles and Huang Shi's compilation rhyming dictionaries. It includes 4 sections. Section 1 analyzes the arrangement styles such as."Kinds of Sounds" and "Rhyming Collections" and investigates its rhyming of division and finally concludes that "Kinds of Sounds " is in threshold level and rhyming of division is not clear. The book attaches much importance to wordbook. Although rhyming collections are divided into rhyming sections, they are not perfect because the rhyming of division is a little wider. Section 2 analyzes the arrangement style of "Yunlue" and Yin Pu and concludes that the rhyme of the rhyming dictionaries of 6 dynasties is different. Although the rhyming sections are not improved, the arrangement style develops faster than Wei and Jin rhyming dictionaries. Section 3 analyzes the arrangement style of "Tang Yun" and "Qie Yun" and investigates the relations between previous and later rhyming dictionaries and concludes that the rhyming section is much improved and is quite the same as the arrangement sections of "Guang Yun". Finally, based on the previous materials, the author concludes the changes of the styles of rhyming dictionaries before Sui and Tang dynasties It is a process of continual adjustment and gradual perfection.Chapter V is about the achievements and limitations of Huang Shi's compilation rhyming dictionaries. It includes 2 sections. The first compares Huang Shi's dictionaries with Ren Dachun's, Ma Guohan's and Gu Zhenfu's so as to conclude the achievements that Huang Shi made, which include the completeness, origin the close combination of the compilations and the use of other compilation results. The section points out the shortcomings in Huang Shi's dictionaries, which include leaveouts; compilation notes not precise; some compilation styles not perfect; materials collection not enough.Conclusion: Summing up the value and meaning of Huang Shi's compilation rhyming dictionaries, and the achievements he made so as to assess him objectively.
