Multi-Protocol Label Switching is a technology that combines the simplicity of IP routing with the high-speed switching of ATM. Mobile IP is a protocol that allows users to move around and yet maintain continuous IP network connectivity. In this paper, we propose a scheme to integrate the Mobile IP and MPLS protocols. . MPLS combines the efficiency and simplicity of IP routing together with the high-speed switching capability of ATM. The integration improves the scalability of the Mobile IP data forwarding process by leveraging on the features of MPLS which are fast switching, small state maintenance and high scalability. The integration of MPLS into Mobile IP, improve the performance of Mobile IP, especially when a switch is happening. This paper introduces the MPLS protocols into the Mobile IP protocols. By taking full use of the features of the MPLS protocols, people remove the need for IP-in-IP tunneling. Instead, the whole data forwarding process is executed in the MPLS layer, and the label switching is much faster than tradition IP forwarding. So the transmission delay and packet processing overhead are reduced and the scalability of the Mobile IP protocols is improved.
