H.264 common to all video coding standards present. And some new techniques, such as spatial prediction are in intra-coding, alterable block size motion compensation, 4×4 integer transformation, and content adaptive binary arithmetic coding (CABAC). Thus, the computational complexity of H.264 is far more demanding than any existing video coding algorithm which can not satisfy the demand of various real time video communication, so there must be some meliorative arithmetic.The demand and likelihood of video compression and the video compression development and actuality are introduced first in Chapter 1 ,later, The technology of the existing video compression criterion characteristics are analyze and the advantages of H.264 is indicated in Chapter 2.In chapter 3,we analyze and research the key technology on H.264.The main research results achieved in this paper are in chapter 4 and chapter 5.Chapter 4 researched fast motion estimate search algorithm in existence which was one of most time-consuming module, for example Diamond Search and Hybrid Unsymmetrical-cross Multi-Hexagon-grid Search and so on, which can search better similar image block, but they need to search more pels point, then, an improved inter-code algorithm is put forward based on the faltiness of the using much time, finally, the emulational experiment is executed for the availability on the new arithmetic.The intra-prediction method is analyzed in detail in Chapter 5, including the fast arithmetic of improving intra predict direction and so on. and the prediction mode selection is researched, then a fast mode selection method based adaptive threshold is given. The threshold can be adjusted adaptively based on both the image texture and the relativity of space-time, finally, find the optimal mode to end the selection process. The emulational results show that the improvement arithmetic shorten coding time and improve the coding efficiency with a little change for PSNR and coding rate.A brief summery and prospect is given in the last chapter.
