Internet Protocol Television (IPTV) is the key point of integration of telecom network, internet and broadcast network, and is rapidly developed all over the world. It has been stepped from lab testing to large-scale commercial application. Nowadays, IPTV systems of different equipment providers can not be connected and communicated with each other. It is expensive to develop new services, and existing IPTV equipment resource would be wasted after IPTV standardization is announced. Middleware can solve these problems very well. Therefore, Middleware and Application Platforms have been taken as ones of the most important components of IPTV standardization architecture by International Telecommunication Union Telecommunication Standardization Sector (ITU-T) IPTV Focus Group.Referring to the documents of ITU-T IPTV Focus Group, the functional framework of IPTV system and the principle of Electronic Program Guide (EPG) are firstly introduced in this master thesis. Secondly, the middleware based on message queue and IPTV system middleware are discussed deeply. Aiming at the characteristics of IPTV system architecture and the requirements for metadata delivery in EPG, a middleware system for metadata delivery which is based on message queue is designed. The middleware is open and extensible. Middleware framework, APIs of middleware and the data processing flow in subsystems are especially designed in detail. And then, an implementation program of the middleware is provided with Java, XML and DOM. Finally, a testing plan is designed based on the function requirements of the middleware.
