Along with the fast development of ink-jet printing technology and continuous improvement of ink-jet printer, the ink-jet recording material was also developed. The effect of ink-jet printing image especially colored ink-jet printing image is strongly related to the performance of ink-jet recording material, besides of the precision and function of ink-jet printer and the quality of ink. The brightness and color purity affect the ink-jet recording material performance mostly with the progressive wastage of ink-jet recording material in these years and the request of ink absorption and color reappearance was improved as well. So the request of preservation of ink-jet recording material especially water fastness and light fastness was also improved obviously. In this paper two different cationic polymers poly-diallyl dimethyl ammonium chloride (PDMDAAC) and poly-diallyl dimethyl ammonium chloride -propylene acyl amine (PDMDAAC-AM) were synthesized. They were used in the coating of ink-jet recording material, and the effect of different cationic polymers on the rate of the ink absorption, the definition and water fastness of the ink-jet recording material were studied.Otherwise, the other additive component of ink-jet recording coating, for example, the type and amount of the adhesive—PVA, the dispersant and the hydrophilic polymer—PVP etc. were confirmed by experiment. In the same time, the composition of ink-jet recording coating was optimized by plentiful experiment, and then ink-jet recording material with excellent water fastness and high printing quality were obtained. The results showed that the ink-jet recording performance, for example, the rate of the ink absorption, the definition and water fastness could be improved when adding appropriate amount of cationic polymers poly-diallyl dimethyl ammonium chloride (PDMDAAC) or poly-diallyl dimethyl ammonium chloride -propylene acyl amine (PDMDAAC-AM) to the coating of ink-jet recording material. Compared with the ink-jet recording coating with addition of PDMDAAC, the ink-jet recording coating with addition of PDMDAAC-AM could have better ink absorption and water fastness performance.
