In recent years, the development of information technology promotes the rapid improvement of broadcast and television field. In the process of planning for broadcasting and television network, traditional radio wave propagation methods are imprecise in predicting field strengths because of the influence of the topographic factor. As a result, lots of important items including frequency assignment, interference analysis and coverage calculation are short of enough scientific support, which hinder the development of broadcast and television.In view of the superiority of GIS in spatial data management and terrain analysis, this paper attempts to apply GIS technology to radio wave propagation model of broadcasting and television.1. Based on the function of GIS in spatial data management, basic geographic database and thematic broadcasting and television database have been constructed respectively; multi-type thematic data and multi-scale spatial data have been achieved the compositive management. These supply the geographical information platform for the model study.2. Using terrain analysis technology of GIS, the paper carries path analysis of the radio wave in the mountainous area while considering the diffraction influence of terrain and obstacles. Consequently, the radio wave diffraction algorithm in the smooth way and in the obstacles way is accomplished.3. Founded on radio wave propagation fundamental theory, the paper emphasizes on studying radio wave diffraction model of broadcasting and television based on GIS as well as its application methods. Finally, taking the moving project of NO.703 station in Sichuan Province for example, the application of GIS technology in radio wave diffraction model of broadcasting and television is summarized and validated.The researches on radio wave diffraction model in GIS technology can improve the field strength prediction accuracy and enhance the scientific character in the network planning. Obviously, the study on radio wave diffraction model of broadcasting and television based on GIS plays an important research worth and practical role in the digital development of the broadcast and television.
