Because of the explosive growth and extensive using of the computer technology, many people believe that the intelligent computer only extends the modern computer esaily. Computer intelligence would catch up with or preponderate over our human brain so as keep on increasing its processor speed, memory capacity and the performance of software. But there are lots of issues to be resolved in practice. Many systems have very poor performance when working on some complicated image analyzing and processing even inferior to a baby.With the development of times and the increasing demand of society, technique of human face recognition and detection becomes one of the most important tasks for computer vision and pattern recognition. Face detection is the foundation of face recognition system. The first step is to detect human faces from background of images. However, the background can always be more complicated because of the brightness and different head postures.This thesis is to talk about human face detection applications. Some issues about face detection are discussed and studied in this paper. The experiments indicate that the methods of face detection proposed in this paper are reasonable, showing a certain degree of theoretical and practical value. The research work of this paper mainly includes the following several aspects:1. Traditional edge detection algorithms are introduced in human face detection applications. The comparing of several common algorithms' advantages and disadvantages is made through the results of them. Some potential algorithms—Roberts, Log, Canny and Sobel are selected and are attempted to adopt to the application of face detection. Comparative ideal edge lines of faces are detected, which have meaningful indication to next step of detection.2. Face detection algorithm based on the model of faces' skin color is carried out by using the skin color information of color image. YCrCb color space in which chrominance and luminance are separated is adopted because of its high suitability to the face detection application comparing with other color spaces. The results show that skin color information plays a practical role in the fast face detection.
