People get more and more knowledges about the technologies of NGN core network along with the development of technique. With the development of FMC, IMS has become the first choice for standard organization, operator and equipment vendor to develop NGN technologies. The operator level ethernet becomes the core technologies in NGN.In order to conformant the developing trend of NGN, 3GPP R5 defines IP Multimedia Subsystem (IMS) which provides the connection of the cellular mobile network and the Internet technology. At the same time, as the reason that the technology related to SIP has already been developed mutually, while the technology of IMS is just at the start point, to find a transitional solution is asked urgently. The solution in this project is to solve the interoperability between IMS and SIP basic on OpenIMS.As a starting point, the frameworks and the main components of IMS and OpenIMS are studied and analyzed. Basic on these theories, an interoperability solution between IMS and SIP is come up with describing the designing the system. Additionally, practical implementation of the solution is necessary.And then, several test cases are designed for the new solution. 3GPP Release 6 is used as the specification. SIPp and Wireshark are used to test and trace the SIP signaling for analyzing the functions of each component of OpenIMS. According to the testing result, evaluation of functionality and performance of the solution for interoperability between IMS and SIP are given.The last challenge of the project is to extend the interoperability solution between IMS and SIP from OpenIMS domain to two domains which contain OpenIMS domain and non-OpenIMS enterprise domain. Through some implementations, the extending solution can be verified to right.
