The fractal is a newly emerging geometry concept. The fractal method is an effective tool to describe irregular geometrical shapes. Since Mandelbrot first proposed the fractal theory in 1975, the fractal has been intensively studied and widely used in many fields such as mathematics,. physics,chemistry,material,physic,biology,mechanics,geology even in economics,sociology and art, etc. Dislike the traditional geometries the fractal along with the significant development of computer graphics enables the simulation of natural scenery and building entourage conveniently.Recently, based on the development of computer technology, computer has increasingly become a useful tool in landscape architecture design. Furthermore, it effectively helps designers in the reduction of consuming time and cost that the processing is very fast and modification is enabled. Nowadays AutoCAD is one of the most popular software employed in construction design. However, it is not convenient to simulate plants water and terrain with AutoCAD. Applied with fractal, this problem can be solved easily. By combining fractal with images and modeling software we can create more plenty and real images.In this paper we propose a method that produces fractal image in AutoCAD by applying the fractal theory to landscape architecture design using Auto LISP language. This work helps extend the function of AutoCAD and provide a new tool in landscape architecture design. The main works presented in this paper are as follows:1. First of all, knowledge of fractal theory is exposed. Together with this, expounding the mathematic theory, elementary principle, dimension of fractal and representative fractal sets is fully considered. Additionally, understanding of basic method of fractal, L-system, and iterative function system is also mentioned.2. Secondly, introduction to the general condition of the world landscape architecture design and basic principles and techniques of landscape design will be given. Analysis of the application of AutoCAD and basic method of computer-aided design on landscape architecture is described in detailed.3. Applying the fractal method into computer-aided design in landscape architecture design by producing fractal tree using Auto LISP language in AutoCAD is a crucial part. Customizing the menu of AutoCAD is the last content of paper.A study on fractal theory and its application in computer-aided design on landscape architecture are presented in this paper. The objective of this study is to further promote the development of fractal theory and computer aided design on landscape architecture.
