With the saturation of commodities and the acceleration of consuming speed, theconsumers'demands tend to be more and more various, characteristic and selective. Facing thisreality, many enterprises begin to realize the importance of product design and pay moreattention to creative products. Creative design can satisfy the novel and ever-changing marketdemands and help to make the product more competitive. Thus, creative design has been thepopular research item in computer-aided design field.Fractal is an effect tool to describe irregular geometrical shapes, characteristic of fractalgraphs is the irregular trait as a whole and the regular trait in part. The fractal graphs have theself-similar and self-growing characteristic and it is good at describing complex and irregulargeometrical shapes of nature. Using fractal theory in creative design not only enhances thecapacity of designers but also extends the research of technology and automatization of design.Therefore, more and more scholars begin to pay attention to the issue that uses fractal theory increative design.This paper studies the self-similar and self-growing characteristic of fractal theory andanalyzes L-system and iterative function system in order to apply fractal theory to creativedesign and enrich the idea of designs and heighten the competition of products.Chapter 2 analyzes fractal theory. First, it introduces the mathematic basis of fractal theory,such as the fractal definition, dimension, fractal principle and representative fractal sets. Then, itanalyzes basic methods of fractal theory, L-system and iterative function system. Finally itintroduces the generating technology and the application fields of fractal theory.Chapter 3 investigates the theories and techniques of creative conceptual design. Firstly, itintroduces the definitions of conceptual design, computer-aided conceptual design andconceptual design to support innovation. Secondly, it introduces three common creative designs,creative design of system interrogation, creative design of system enumeration and creativedesign of association and analogy. Thirdly, it analyzes two methods of conceptual design, themethod based on combination principle and the case-based reasoning method. Finally, it presentsthe theory of creative design of analogy based on fractal theory.Chapter 4 studies creative design based on fractal theory. Firstly, it introduces the modelingmethod of abnormal shapes. Secondly, it analyzes the defect of 2D L-system, extends L-systemfrom 2D to 3D, and advances a generating method of fractal graph based on 3D L-system, andtakes bionic tree as example to do the simulation.
