At present the programmable embedded technology is a research hotspot in the electronic information domain in the world. The SOPC ideology based the programmable logic device is the key technology. This paper researches the key techniques of image edge detecting system aiming at the portable multimedia device, embedded video monitoring system and so on. It includes the processor, image edge detecting coprocessor, DMA controller and LCD controller. Adding on the periphery memory, it becomes a complete programmable embedded image processing system. It can detect the edge of the image and displays the result on the LCD screen.The main contribution works are as follows:1. Comparing and analyzing the image processing methods used in the embedded system, it is concluded that it is superior to make image process using FPGA in working velocity and developing cycle. Making analysis for many algorithms used in the image edge detecting, it is concluded that it has advantages and feasibility in use of the Sobel and Prewitt operator to design circuits. 2. An image edge detecting coprocessor circuit model is designed, the function of the model is simulated and validated using different methods such as Matlab, Modelsim and hardware language. Assemble Avolon bus for the model and use it as the whole system's periphery.3. The LCD controller and timing sequence circuit are designed using the VHDL language to ensure the LCD screen working correctly. Assemble Avolon bus for the circuit and use it as the whole system's periphery.4. The whole system circuit is designed, the off-the-shelf and custom components are integrated into a SOPC system using the QuartusII software, and the program is designed in the NiosII IDE. At last the whole system is downloaded the FPGA on the Altera Stratix EP1S10 developing platform to run and be test, the result of the experiment indicates the design of the image edge detecting is correct.
