With the development of the computing technology and the numerical calculating technology, the computer is applied to the casting field more and more. The numerical simulation technology can simulate the forming process of mold filling, the solidification and so on in the casting without experiencing practical moulding, and improve greatly the yield efficiency and economic benefits. Therefore, the compute technology has become important meanings in casting production.The filling process of liquid metal is the most important phase during a casting forming. The present situation of numerical simulation in the mold filling process and some problems bringing out in the process of research are described. The computing methods are discussed during filling process. The flow of the metal liquid can be regarded as the un-compressible Newton type fluid, so they still follow the law of conservation of quality, the law of conservation of momentum, we can set up the model equations of mathematics in view of the above laws, disperse these mathematics equations with Finite Difference Method to obtain the difference forms of mathematical model. On basis of the study on border condition of the filling process, the solution algorithm (SOLA) method was used to solve velocity and pressure, and the volume of fluid (VOF) method was used to deal with the three-dimensional free surface of fluid, which includes the orientation and the motion of the free surface.In view of more computing time and bad efficiency, the paper studies the present methods that raise computing efficiency of numerical simulation. Three methods are investigated to raise computational efficiency. With above improved algorithms, the numerical simulation for casting are accomplished to obtain the results of numerical simulation. The results accord with the practical situation. The result of the thesis indicated the mathematics model, the computing technology of three-dimension flow field and the treatment methods of the surface can be applied into the computer simulation of the mold filling process.
