The emergence of the media streaming makes the multimedia be transferred over network continuously in real-time mode possible. Users needn't have to wait until the whole media is downloaded, which meets users' desire of real-time mutual communication. At present, most media streaming servers are based on C/S model which limits their extensibility and reliability. However, the media streaming technology based on P2P (Peer-to-Peer) can overcome these limitations, which makes the transportation and application with mass scale media streaming possible. Though there are already some successful P2P real-time broadcasting systems such as PPLive, PPstream, a successful P2P VoD system has not appeared yet.The dissertation gives a full research on the traits of media streaming and studies suitable P2P architecture for transportation and storage of media streaming, and analyzes their core techniques. A mixed P2P network model that is suitable for mass scale application is proposed. And the implementation of a P2P VoD system based on the model is introduced. Meanwhile, the dissertation presents its research on media-data buffer (the key technique of P2P VoD system) and proposes a dynamic resources downloading algorithm based on pre-connection which has been proved very effective by experiments in reducing negative impact of network instability. Finally, the dissertation introduces directions of P2P streaming development and challenges it has been confronting, and also my next research work.
