The development of computer technology laid the foundations of Computer Animation. Especially recent years, with the popularity of Motion Capture Systems, Computer Animation has made great progress, and has been widely used in film, game, education and military. However, problems occur concerning how to produce animation using motion capture data conveniently and effectively. Under this background, computer animation based on the motion capture data has been a hot topic in Computer Graphics.This paper presents a motion data retrieval and synthesis algorithm based on motion graph, and implements a system for motion retrieval and synthesis named MG-Motion. We calculate transitions in motion capture data, and generate new motion by walking on the graph. Compared to other motion synthesis methods, the motion generated by our method is more realistic and more controllable, that is very important in the interactive environment.In chapter one, we make a brief survey on motion editing and motion synthesis technologies, and analyze them. Then in chapter two we introduce the motion capture data file format BVH, and explain how to display motion from motion data. We present the structure of motion graph and show how to build motion graph from motion data in chapter three. Then in chapter four we explain how to synthesize motion used motion graph. Finally, in chapter five we introduce the motion retrieval and synthesis system, and give the result of experiment of our system. At the end of paper , we conclude with a brief discussion of future work.
