The sluice gate is the basic water conservancy establishment in water resources system. But, it acts a very importance part in flood control and drought relief and the water resources application. The veracity of sluice gate opening is not only relating to the veracity of sluice gate control, but also relate to the veracious result of emission ability of reservoir. At present, the measurement of sluice gate opening usually uses the digital encoder. It has the advantage of high measuring precision and uses the absolute coding method which makes it widely used. However, when the measurement precision requirements reach the level of mm, the amounts of the encoder have to be enlarged more than 10 times which will increase the cost. To counter the weakness of the present sluice gate opening instrument, this thesis design and develops a new measuring instrument of the sluice gate opening based on the reed switch array which is conveniently installed and can use the absolute coding technology to carry out the absolute measurement.This thesis firstly introduces the measuring principle of sluice gate and the design in the mass of the measuring instrument. Then, this thesis analyzes the hardware and software design. In hardware design, it describes the circuit principle and the relative design of the measuring instrument's circuits; in software design, it describes the idea of the main program and the relative functions subprogram as well as carry out their structure flow diagram. Therefore, this thesis introduces the way of serial communication and the communication protocol. Finally, it analyzes the structure design and installation method of the measuring instrument and the testing way and result of the measuring instrument. The testing result shows that the sluice gate opening measuring instrument conforms to the demands of design.
