FPGA (Field Programable Gate Array) not only has a mature structure, abundant logic elements, but also is highly integrated and can be configured according to different applications, so it is usually used in algorithm implementations and design verifications. For the advantages of OFDM (Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexing), it has been used in communication areas widely and established many communication standards. Synchronization is the critical technology of communication system and OFDM communication is different from single carrier communication, it not only needs a highly precise synchronization but also need a new synchronization method. For all the reasons above, my research direction is Research and Implementation of Synchronization in OFDM communication system based on FPGA.In this article, at first, introduce the basic concepts, OFDM communication system components and the effects of synchronization error to the system. And then, select classic symbol timing synchronization, carrier fractional offset estimation, symbol timing offset estimation and carrier phase error estimation algorithms, research principles of these algorithms, acquire implementation schemes at last. According to these implemention schemes we execute all of these algorithms by coding in Verilog HDL or using IP Cores supplied by Altera on QuartusII 6.0 software platform.According to different synchronization circuits, we do post P&R simulations by using QuartusII 6.0 time analysis tool, ModelSim SE 6.2a post simulation tool and Debussy 5.3v9 wave observation tool, then analyse the simulation results and compare results with principles. At last, download all these circuits to FPGA development board based on EP2CF672C6, observe synchronization effects during circuit running period, compare test results with simulation results and draw a conclusion.
