Manufacturing cost may be one of the most concerned problems covering the whole product life cycle from concept design, production, sales, and service. The cost of a product is closed related to its market life, the survival and development of an enterprise, and all dedication of a vendor and a buyer both. However, manufacturing cost in an enterprise is a complicated intercrossing problem of technology and management. There is no ideal solution in the traditional ERP and CAX for estimation of manufacturing cost. It is obvious that the estimating of manufacturing cost is a bottleneck in current application of computer-integrated manufacturing.The research may be an attempt for realization of estimating manufacturing cost. Based on the reference of previous literature and the analysis of the problem, the author constructed a frame of cost estimating system for cutting metal parts with the concept of PLM. The logical relations and data flows between the estimating system and other subsystems, and the modules of the estimating system are discussed and analyzed in detail in the dissertation.With the research of the variation and flow path of BOM, the cost estimating and its data structure have been designed with the variety of BOM views. An activity-based cost estimating arithmetic is presented, which is taken BOM as the motivated factor to drive the cost calculation.According to the requirements of widely application of CNC manufacturing, the technology of virtual manufacturing and automatic feature recognition has been introduced into the calculation of labor cost. A CNC running estimating method is realized with the recognition of NC code, which can be proved to be more robust than that of based on 3D geometry features.A prototype system is developed to prove the calculation methods and viewpoints presented in this dissertation. This prototype system can also be taken as the basic frame for developing the commercial estimating system in the future.
