VM (Virtual Manufacturing) will become one of key technologies to relieve the bottleneck between CAD and manufacturing system, which is accepted by people now. This paper points out that there are eight key techniques in VM for electronic products, studies and solves the six of these key techniques that are as described below. The paper defines a data transition format from CAD data to VM system, which achieves the seamless link between the software of Protel98 and the VM system. The method of VM library establishment is presented, related software is programmed and the VM component library is built up. The diagnosis and modification of mistakes in CAD data is studied, the method is presented and a real example is given. Development environments of VM systems are compared and some suggestions are given. In the end of the paper, a VM software for SMT is developed which shows that all the techniques mentioned above can work correctly, so they can be used as reference on the research of VM technology for other industries.
