In recent years, advances in MEMS technology, wireless communications, and microelectronics have enabled the development of micro sensor nodes that integrating the ability of sensing, computing, and communication. These intelligent micro sensor nodes self-organize wirelessly to form networks for distributed and collaborative sensing in the target region, thus sensornet come out. Sensornet can be widely used in environmental monitoring, military reconnaissance, medical and health services, intelligent living environment and other fields. As most of distributed systems, it is important for sensornet to have an infrastructure to indicate failure nodes, resource consumption and overall performance of system. This paper first outlines the background, characteristics and challenges of sensornet, and illustrates the necessity of the sensornet health monitoring study by analyzing the state of the art. To design health monitoring system component applying to the sensornet, software and hardware technologies of nodes are studied in-depth; moreover, the prototype of the node platform is designed and implemented. According to the characteristics of the sensor nodes SHMC (Sensornet Health Monitoring Component) is designed, including lightweight log module, metadata query interface and metadata management framework, which makes the system status monitoring more flexible and efficient. Focusing on the study of data collection and dissemination protocols, a clustering model based on maximum connectivity is proposed and its effectivity is validated by simulation. On the basis of the model a hierarchical data collection and dissemination network protocols are implemented. Besides, the simulation result shows the new protocols are better than the existing ones on the energy-efficiency and scalability. On the designed node platform the SHMC prototype is realized, and the monitoring systems based on SHMC is used in a battlefield environment for real-time system status monitoring.
