With the fast development of communication and multimediate technology, the coding and transmission of the video image have become the advanced item of information science. In order to improve the development and standardization of the video coding technology,JVT(Joint Video Team)provide the new video coding standard H.264 in 2003.It can achieve enhanced compression and better network adaptability compared with the existing standards (MPEG-2/MPEG-4/H.261/H.263). But the complexity of H.264 is several times higher and the research on how to improve the coding rate with the same qulity of image is very necessary.Firstly, the existing standards are introduced, including H.26x of ITU-U, MPEG of ISO/IEC and AVS of our country. The codec frame and new video techologies being adopted in H.264 is deeply studied.By analyzing the capability and complexity of H.264 encoder,we decide to optimize the motion estimation modual.Based on the study of the present fast motion search algorithm, a new fast motion search algorithm based on all-zero block detection in H.264 is proposed. The algorithm is accelerated in three perspectives, (1) two steps (integer-pels and half-pels motion search) early termination method is provided, and different detection criterion in diffeent precision motion search;(2) the deduction of the detection criterion is more precise.Compared with the existing fast motion search algorithm based on all-zero block detection, the proposed method can achieve significant complexity reduction of motion search and encoder while the degradation in video quality is negligible. At last, the optimization methods of programme are applied to improve the coding efficiency farther. A summary of the dissertation is presented and the future work of this dissertation is discussed.
