The study of the combustion characteristics of flame is very necessary in many applications, such as detecting an underlying fire, monitoring the working state of gas engines or power plant boilers, developing an explosion suppression set for armored cars. So far there are two main methods to study the flame, one is the flame spectrometry, and the other is the flame digital image processing. Limited to the single test equipment, however, the two methods can only do the research in some restricted wave bands.In this paper, a set of hardware control system was designed for flame spectrum and image detection aiming at the standard flame, SR-5000 infrared spectrum detector, AvaSpec-2048 UV spectrum detector and the color CCD tele-camera. With the cooperation of the button panel and the operating soft, any two or more equipments can be started up simultaneously and the data of UV and infrared or image can be acquired synchronously. As a result, the flame spectrum of the whole wave-band and the image corresponding to every frame spectrum data can be obtained.Furthermore, according to the measure results at different test modes, this paper made some comprehensive studying of combustion characteristics of the flame. We analyzed the emission spectrum and discussed the average temperature, spectral emissivity, combustion resultant, flash frequency of the flame. The edge position, visible area and the mean of gray value of flame also be discussed by analyzing the flame images. Finally, we studied the fire detectors, and associated the flame characteristics showed in spectrum with the detector performance, and designed the matching parameters quantitatively.
