Nowadays, according to people's demands, digital products should be small, easy to carry and operate, and have low power dissipation. Since PCs cannot fulfill all the needs, development of PDAs and other embedded systems has become a hot area of IT industry. Embedded processor is the heart of embedded system. Most of new embedded systems have RISC processor as their cores, because of its simple structure, rapid speed and great power of processing, and other advantages. ARM Corporation is the creator of the standard of RISC. And XScale is a micro architecture of ARM, and is developed by Intel Corporation and ARM Corporation.This thesis is focus on the research of application of Intel Sitsang/PXA255 Evaluation Platform, whose processor, PXA255, is a processor of XScale architecture. And simple application, graphical application, user space driver and kernel space driver on Linux OS, and test program on bare metal, running on the platform, are all developed. Then how to port them to the platform is introduced, too. At last, a USB video-audio camera connecting to the platform is made.There are six chapters. Chapter One is about introduction of ARM technology and its micro architecture XScale. Chapter Two is about introduction of the items of the package of Intel Sitsang/PXA255, and the devices and defect of Intel Sitsang/PXA255 Evaluation Platform, the most important item in it. Chapter Three is about how to port Linux OS from host PC to the platform. It introduces the fastest way of every step. In Chapter Four, how to write and debug the test program for the hardware devices of bare ARM machines (Intel Sitsang/PXA255 Evaluation Platform for example), without OS or application software installed, is introduced. Chapter Five is about how to generate the image file of Redboot, Linux kernel and file system. Then development of simple application, Qtopia desktop environment, graphical application, and user space driver is introduced. Chapter Six is about analysis of two chips, OV7620 and OV519. Then how to make a USB video-audio camera using them is introduced. At last, implement of the driver of the camera is discussed.
