The change is the eternal subject which the software development faces. The software demand change brings a very big challenge to the software development. In order to satisfy this need, one kind of software architecture must be established to be able with the enterprise service communal development. It should be able to reply to the change of market effectively, satisfy the individual demand of enterprise customer, fit the changes of outside and internal environment quickly, and enhance the efficiency of software development greatly.Based on the study of the component technology and software architecture, the paper designs a component-based multi-tier software architecture called CBMSA.This architecture can enhance the efficiency of software development, and fit the change of environment.The main work stated in this paper includes:(1) It specifies the component technology in detail from the definition, classification, characteristic and unified component standard. Then it discusses the component-based development.(2) Based on the analysis and study of traditional tier software architecture, the paper gives the structure of five-tier software architecture. Combining the component technology and five-tier software architecture, it designs a component-based multi-tier software architecture called CBMSA.(3) It studies the strategies of component distilling, component management, software reuse and software updating based on CBMSA.(4) A store management information system called SMIS is developed based on CBMSA, and some instances of compoents are expressed.
