In this paper the design of software and hardware of intelligent communication terminal in the engineering machines which is front apparatus of the engineering machines global position and monitoring system is introduced. The intelligent communication terminal is mainly used to collect the location (by GPS) and status information of moving engineering machines, and send it to the supervisory control desk through GSM/GPRS wireless network (quite mature and reliable technologies with vast coverage), so that the center could supervise and manage each engineering machines.Firstly, the related work on global position and monitoring system of engineering machines is introduced, and the capacity and required capability of their intelligent communication terminals are discussed in detail. The overall design based on the requirement is also laid out.Secondly, the hardware requirement and choice on each part of apparatus and the design and realization of circuits in each part are presented. The core of hardware circuits is AT89C55WD microcontroller. The circuit modules, including memory, real-time clock, interfaces such as CAN bus, RS-232, GPRS, GSM modules, digital and analog signals collection and so on were designed according to the function requirement. Meanwhile, anti-jamming methods for some hardware circuits are also proposed.Thirdly, the design and realization of terminal software are presented. In this part, firstly all kinds of data formats and the PDU format of messages are introduced. Then the realization of each functionally child modules of software is introduced in detail, including receiving-processing of GPS data, and the receiving-sending of messages and CAN data. At last, some experiments on communication in GPRS ways are taken, and the reliability of the software and the existing problems in debugging are also discussed. Finally, future work is discussed, and some ideas on the view of future terminals are proposed.
