The natural phenomena simulation is an important research area of computer graphics. In this dissertation we construct a hybrid system for special effect simulation. The system makes use of advantages of particle system and video texture synthesis to produce special effects ranging from fire, smoke and water.Particle system is regarded as one of the most successful technique to simulate irregular fuzzy objects. It uses a large number of small particles, which have certain life period and other properties, to render one or more objects, such as flame, explosion, smoke, as well as grass and leaves of the plant. Because of its small amount of computation and the ability to guarantee image quality during the real time rendering, particle system is generally used in the areas of games, movies, etc. this technology is used to simulate fire and smoke in our special effect system.A drawback associated with particle system is that particle system is not suitable to produce water effects, because huge amount of particles are required to represent water in large area, thus involving heavy calculation to produce water animation. Video texture is a new median introduced in recent years, which is something between the photo and video that captures dynamics of the video and looks realistic. To synthesize a video with video texture the temporal continuity must be maintained. We can synthesize a continuous stream of images by repeating loops detected in the original video. In this dissertation we construct a hybrid system utilizing both particle system and video texture synthesis. We developed a set of tools for the high level control of particles as well as video texture synthesis. Relevant examples are given in the dissertation to demonstrate the power of such hybrid system.
