With the exploding scale and complexity of Internet in these years, it's more and more important to get a complete and correct Internet topology, which can be used in these fields such as network management, network optimization and fault location. Now, the research on network topology discovery technique is focused on IP layer mainly, and the discovery technique is still immature and nonsystematic, so much more attention should be paid urgently to the issue. As one of the most important tasks, this paper is from the national key project "Study of IP Network Topology Discovery and Performance Analysis Based on Network Probing" which is supported by NSFC. New ideas and methods have been given and large amount of materials and certain improvement has been obtained on this project.This paper is organized as follows: Firstly, the major existing network topology discovery techniques are summarized, analyzed and compared with each other; Secondly, by contrasting topology discovery probed by single-point with distributed topology discovery method, a Doubletree-based improved algorithm of distributed topology discovery is proposed, which is proved by analysis to reduce the redundancy of link effectively and to enhance discovering velocity and veracity. Thirdly, a SNMP protocol based topology discovery algorithm and its improvement is presented. Finally, a new topology discovery method, which can effectively improve probe velocity and veracity, is proposed and tested for its superiority.
