Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) is one of the most important developing trends of the modern radar techniques. SAR is a kind of advanced equipment to observe ground by microwave. It has the ability of working under all the weathers and all the days. The data compression technique is essential for SARs. As the constantly improvment of the function index of the SAR such as resolution and mapping bandwidth, the data rate has been greatly increased. Techniques of SAR are especially the space-borne developed toward achieving both raw data acquisition, which is the current state of the art, and on-board real-time imaging. Therefore, data compression algorithm will be developed to realize compressing both raw data and image data in the future. According to the requirements of a certain institution, plus the after imaging data of the BMP image and the floating point modulus image of the true airborne radar, this article carries out the research towards the compression method based on the improved static image compression standard (JPEG), and also towards the self adaptive regional coding method based on the DCT. Tests have proved a sound compression effect. In this article, the present developing states of SARs are first introduced, following that you will get a general view of the principles of the airborne radar, and the classification of the SAR data. Finally the researching purposes of the SAR imaging data compression algorithm and the major tasks of this article are described. In Chapter 2, the present developing state of the data compression theory and the static image compression are introduced. In Chapter 3, the standard of the static image compression (JPEG) are introduced, and the improvement of this standard, along with its applications it in the compression of the imaging data of the SAR are carried out.Chapter 4, introduces different compression methods based on DCT, and carries out the the compression with a constant integer ratio towards the 32 bit floating point module image data of SARs also. The end statement has made a conclusion of the whole article, and presents an assumption of the further researchs.
