In recent years, with the development of the theory and technology of zoom lens,the quality of it become beter and the category of it become more. It is popular in many areas.Under this situation,the research of zoom lens design is significant.The studies carried out in this thesis are based on the imaging principles of diffractive optical element (DOE) and the technical characteristics of infrared optical zoom system. The main points are outlined as follows:1. The development and applications of DOE and infrared zoom system are reviewed.2. The characteristic of the diffractive optical element is studied, which is applied in the infrared optical system. is widely applied in the optical system. However, the application of just begin . The most papers are consulted in the thesis, and the characteristic of the diffractive optical element is described and summarized, which provide necessary theory basic for the farther study.3. The imaging theory of DOEs and Gaussian principles of optical zoom systems are analyzed and based on which an infrared zoom optical system according to the traditonal method of P and W.4. According to the regulations of automatic optical design and relying on the powerful functions of CODE V software, we explore another technique of optical zoom design and transfer an ideal optical system into a hybrid refractive/diffractive zoom system of fixed F-number by current patent. The result shows that the F-number of our system remains to be 1 and the optical transfer function approaches to be diffraction-limited.
