As a new fast optical switching technology which can realize IP over DWDM and combines advantages of OCS and OPS, OBS has been the hot research topic and has a bright future. Kernel node is an important part of OBS network and decides the performance of OBS network. In this paper we present a new solution for OBS core node control cards based on FPGA. First of all, this paper gives a description about the background of optical switching technology, the theory of OBS and the structure of OBS network. Secondly, this paper gives out the structure of OBS kernel node, which includes three parts: network management module, kernel control card and optical switching fabric. For each part, this paper also points out the function and the realization method. The designs of interface and protocol are given for the communication between network management module and kernel node control card.This paper emphasizes on the design of kernel node control card. A NiosII processor system in FPGA built by SOPC technology is used for the hardware platform of the control card. Software is developed in the environment of uC/OSII and LwIP network protocol stack. According to JIT protocol and the function requirements of core node control card, the software modules are designed. Then, we test the control node control card, and the test results show that our solution can meet the requirement of OBS kernel node. It also improves the performance of OBS and the shortest BHP dealing time is 2.25ms. The time proportion which each module needs are detailed which is convenient for the system optimization design.At last, according to the test results, this paper suggests a solution for optimization: shareable-scheduler kernel node control card.
