The increase of network bandwidth and the number of network users brings tremendous load to network servers. People is using various methods to improve whole performance of servers,so the load of servers is relatively reduced. This dissertation explores methods of tuning OS according to the running characteristics of single application, and implements it on Oracle server built on Linux OS. As a result, the performance of Oracle server is improved distinctly.Firstly, the dissertation introduces the basic concepts of Linux OS,Oracle DBMS and performance evaluation. Then it summarizes the current status of correlative researches. Secondly, the dissertation concludes the research methods of OS tuning, and describes building steps of evaluating platform. Thirdly, the dissertation analyses parts of source code of Linux kernel, and explores the tuning schemes of Linux process scheduler and disk I/O scheduler by combining the running characteristics of Oracle. At Last, the dissertation presents the evaluation results of tuning schemes. This dissertation explores research methods of tuning OS according to running characteristics of application, so it can be referred by correlative researches. At the same time, because of improving the performance of Oracle server on Linux, it can make the further development of Linux in server domain and make the comprehensive application of Oracle DBMS.
