With the development of computer and communication technologies, various wireless communication network systems, such as Wireless Wide Area Networks, Wireless Metropolitan Area Networks, Wireless Local Area Networks, Satcom Networks, Bluetooth Networks etc., are replacing traditional wired network step by step to be the last hop for Internet accessing. In order to provide large-scale, high-brandwidth, strong-mobility and cheap Internet accessing and provide ubiquitous, high-quality and high-rate mobile multimedia transmission, how to make all of these heterogeneous networks integrated together will be the developing direction for the next-generation mobile communication. Wireless mesh networking has become an indispensable technique for next-generation wireless networks. It is a critical solution to deploying large-scale wireless networks without relying on preexisting infrastructure. It also enables quick and easy extension of local area networks into a wide area.A wireless mesh network based network integration architecture is presented in this paper for the next-generation networks according to the study of key technologies in wireless mesh networks. Implement schemes for main communication entities including wireless mesh network backbone nodes and mobile terminals in this architecture are also provided. Firstly, the definition, architecture, characteristics and application scenarios of WMN are briefly introduced. Secondly, we do research on the key technologies of wireless mesh networks, and they are secure routing, multipath routing, accessing authentication etc. Then we make performance evaluation for HWMP routing protocol in wireless mesh networks with network simulation tool NS2 and discuss the results in detail. Finally heterogeneous accessing schemes are discussed and a wireless mesh network based network integration architecture is provided. Main communication entities are well designed and implemented on Linux platform via the development of network driver.
