The research of segmentation technology starts from 1970's, which is initially applied in image segmentation especially in the medical image domain. With the development of computer and the 3D mesh model, the application of segmentation technology is spreading from image segmentation to three dimensions mesh segmentation, and then it has become a hot research topic in recent years. This paper has a systematic work on the segmentation methods of dental digital model.Firstly, on the basis of analyzing the acquiring technology and expression methods of tooth digital model, this paper has a lot of adequate work towards tooth digital model data. The expression method of tooth digital model——STL is analyzed and the two file formats of STL tooth model is studied, based on which the topological reconstruction is established, and then we design a type of high efficiency data storage structure; load the STL tooth model document; study and achieve the mesh pick-up technology of the tooth digital model according to the intersection testing theory between the ray and the triangular mesh.Secondly, the segmentation scheme, methods and flow of the dental model are raised by investigating the currently existing segmentation technology, In this paper it first adopts interactive marker-controlled segmentation on the dental digital model, and by analyzing the algorithm efficiency an even more efficient plan is probed as marker identifying method, in which it takes markers as the critical parameter. The algorithm is that the markers can be set by the users interactively, and the markers are used to control the segmentation region numbers, during the segmentation we give a threshold to control stack's operation. The statistics of the experiments shows that the rate of the marker identifying algorithm is improved apparently and it has good segmentation results.Based on the research results above, the dental segmentation software takes VC++ 6.0 and OpenGL as tools. The segmentation module of the Virtual Orthodontics System has been developed and segmentation methods of dental digital model are analyzed and realized, and then we have a detail analysis and comparison on the segmentation algorithms and the segmentation results. The improved algorithm that implemented in this paper is fast-speeding and has good segment results, the whole segmentation module has excellent maneuverability and friendly man-machine interface, which make it reach to the business application standard.
