How to effectively and realistically simulate flexible object deformation become a problem to be solve urgently in computer graphics technology. Since thought of deformation is introduced, people have made more progresses in simulating flexible object. But, Current in the fields of flexible object simulation, none of deformation technology can be applied effectively, which has confined the application of computer graphics technology in the fields of surgery simulation.In the paper, based on comprehensively researching deformation technology theories, we propose to adopt an improved free-form deformation technique to simulate the deformation of the gum in virtual orthodontics system, and get real-time simulation effect. Preparatory to simulating gum deformation, we do sufficient preparative work on a model of jaw. First, we set up a new topological model of STL file topological data structure, and then establish a logical, efficient data storage structure, and lay the foundation for carrying out the deformation simulation in virtual orthodontics system.Our subject is developed with VC++ 6.0 and OpenGL, and object-oriented programming thought is adopted. It has realized the deformation simulation. For getting third dimension, we discuss collision detection problem preparatory in the paper. Last, we analyze the results of deformation simulation, and draw some conclusions that will be helpful for further improvement of deformation technology. These results will lay the foundation for further application research in the system.
