Tension control is known to be the most important system in every winding machine. Material such as paper, plastic film, textile, rubber flake or thin steel, is unwound from or wound onto the machine by the control of specific tension. The tension change affects the processed material greatly. Extreme big tension will lead the distortion or break of the material while extreme small tension makes the stress distortion layer by layer and affects the processing quality; frequent tension change will lead the line speed and the degree of tightness change, and it will also bring the low productivity of qualified products. Therefore the tension control is the key point in the high precision winding system.The paper introduces the development of tension control system domestic and overseas, analyzes the origin and functions of tension, classifies the familiar tension control methods and compared the characteristic of each method. By integrating the advantages of different schemes and considering the costs, the paper raises a new tension control system. It takes C8051F040 as the core controller and takes touch screen as the human machine interface. It gathers tension signal by using the dancer arm and compares with the set value, then applies specific strategy to deal with the data and adjust the control signal immediately. In this way AC motors driven by transducers implement the control of material's tension. The paper introduces the whole system scheme, hardware circuit, software design, and the control arithmetic of the system. Further more, the paper simulates fuzzy control arithmetic and fuzzy self-tuning PID control arithmetic used in the system and analyzes the control effects.Comparing with the traditional tension control systems, the system is highly isolated both in signal input and output. Therefore it has a good performance in anti-noise. This system has a friendly user interface, simply operation, and multiple parameters set. It can provide satisfying control effect and meet the needs of different materials.
