Wireless Local Area Network (WLAN) will become one of important parts of mobile communication system in the future. No necessary to use cables, there are a good deal merits with WLAN, such as mobility, low cost, little circuit troubles and so on. WLAN has being researched and constructed all over the world in order to meet the demand to access Internet quickly and conveniently. The baseband system of the physical layer in the standard IEEE 802.11a is analyzed deeply in this paper. The OFDM transmitter and receiver based on the standard IEEE 802.11a is built with MATLAB, which can be used in the further simulation and circuit design. The algorithms on the key modules such as synchronization and channel estimation modules are described and analyzed at length. The synchronization algorithms involve synchronization with carrier frequencies and symbols. The channel estimation algorithms discussed in this paper are in the time field. All these algorithms are based on the training sequences described by the standard IEEE 802.11a. Comparing among these algorithms has been done with MATLAB. In the end the circuit module about synchronization is designed in VHDL.
