The Ti:sapphire laser is one of the solid-state lasers which can output the widest tunable spectrum at infrared and near-infrared wave band up to now. If it is made into phase-matched quasi-OPO by frequency conversion using nonlinear optical method, the tunable infrared light source with high output power, high efficiency, widely tunable wavelength, long lifetime, compact structure and small volume can be got by adjusting correlative parameters. This light source can be used in optical communication, infrared countermeasure, environmental monitoring, and spectrum study and so on.In this paper, the development and application in the future of tunable pulse Ti:sapphire laser were introduced. Then the meaning of this study is presented. The physical, chemical, and spectral characteristics of the Ti:sapphire are given. The composition and energy level structure is discussed.The rate equation of tunable pulse Ti:sapphire laser is given using the theoretical model of four-level system. The result of numerical simulation for different parameters is given, and some of the main parameters are optimized. The birefraction filter is also designed to get satisfying output-parameters.At last, the Ti:sapphire laser with flat-flat resonant cavity is pumped with the pumping source at 532nm. The pumping source is got from the frequency doubling of Nd:YAG laser. The transmission rate is 45 percents at the output mirror. With the highest pump energy of 470mJ, the output of laser is got with tunable range of 761-843nm, the highest energy of single pulse of 95mJ,the line width of 1nm,the highest slope efficiency of 18.3%, and the highest absolute efficiency of 32.1%. It is found that the saturation of the output did not appear even at the highest pump energy. It indicates that the highest pump energy does not reach the destroying threshold. So the output energy and the conversion efficiency of pump can be further improved by increasing the pump energy.
