In recent years, laser-matter interaction has been given a lot of new content by the rapid development of ultrafast pulsed laser technology.Among them, a new physical phenomenon is supercontinuum radiation generation(wide spectral range of the optical radiation) when the femtosecond laser pass in a nonlinear medium. This paper describes the phenomenon of femtosecond laser pulses to form a super-continuum radiation in the sapphire fiber, including the development status in recent years, supercontinuum generation, and some of the typical(important) characteristics application. Then, in theory, we mainly introduces the main theoretical mechanism of self-phase modulation, multiphoton ionization, plasma defocusing and strength clamped for propagation of ultrashort laser pulse in a transparent medium. In the experiments, we measured the supercontinuum spectrum generated in the sapphire fiber by femtosecond laser, and the effect of different energy, different fiber length to supercontinuum generation were analyzed.
