Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplex (OFDM) is a kind of digital transmission technique with high efficiency. It is regarded as the core technology of the next generation wireless communication systems due to its high spectrum efficiency and robustness to multipath interference. New BWA systems also adopt OFDM as transmission technology. In this thesis, channel estimations of municipality area wireless networks IEEE802.16a based on OFDM physical layer protocol, are investigated.Firstly, we briefly introduced broadband wireless access (BWA) system, IEEE 802.16a protocol and the concept OFDM, analyzed its merits and disadvantages. Secondly, IEEE 802.16a physical layer is discussed in detail, and then fixed broadband wireless channel model and SUI channel model are presented. Simulation platform is set up according to parameters defined in protocol of physical layer and channel model. The emphasis of this thesi is the algorithms of channel estimation in 802.16a. Channel estimation methods based on pilots, such as LS, MMSE and Wiener filter algorithms as well as interpolation based channel estimation methods are discussed. Under SUI-3 channel model, bit error rate (BER) and mean square error (MSE) performance were evaluated. The results were analyzed and some conclusions were drawn. Finally, a conclusion is given.
