The resource discovery is a key problem in wide-area distributed systems. It has great impact on the efficiency the resource sharing and collaborating in such environments, and has gained much attention in Computational Grid, Web Services and Peer-to-Peer researches. Based on previous work on VEGA Grid, this paper gives a full discussion of VEGA's resource discovery mechanism. The resource characteristics in Grid environments are analyzed; the relevant researches in this area are summarized, and the VEGA principle in our research is discussed to guide the resource discovery mechanism design in VEGA Grid. This thesis does original work in the following three points: 1) Giving the definition of resource discovery in grid and proposing a five-axis solution space, which includes membership protocol, overlay construction, resource information preprocessing, request processing and resource representation. 2) Describing the solution of VEGA to these five sub-questions mainly in two parts: a resource-locating model based on the resource information routing-transferring and a three-layered resource representation scheme. Both the locating model and the representation scheme are discussed in theoretic way (algorithms or formalized axioms and theorems) and implementation methods. 3) Further, discussing the problem of evaluating a resource discovery mechanism in Grid environment and pointing out five key elements: resource locating performance, scalability, adaptation to dynamic, load balance and usability. Based on simulating experiment results, VEGA's solution is evaluated in these five aspects, and its efficiency is validated.
