USB is a widely used industrial standard. CAN as an excellent Field Bus is being used in automatic-control fields such as automobile and aviation industries. Embedded systems integrate with advanced technologies such as computer, semi-conductor, micro-electronic sciences and many actual industrial applications, so it is highly stable, efficient and reliable.At the beginning, the thesis briefly discussed USB and CAN, compared the strong points and shortcomings of both. Combined with the introduction of embedded systems, the reasons and feasibilities of developing an USB-CAN protocol converter based on embedded systems were explained.The second part of the thesis studied USB and CAN protocol in detail, focused mainly on the key points related to this topic. It dealt with the bases of developing the USB-CAN protocol converter, and the knowledge is essential to the development procedure.The third part of the thesis explained the hardware design of the USB-CAN converter, including chip selecting and hardware connection designs. The converter has a micro controller, a USB and a CAN controlling chips. The connection designs dealt with the analysis and layout allocation of the connections between the feet of the three chips.The forth part of the thesis examined about the functions and software system of the converter. The real time operating system, Small RTOS 51, which was introduced in the converter, was studied mainly with the necessary key knowledge concerned with the development of the converter. The layout and implementation of the software system were discussed in detail. The layered structure of the software system was outlined. After the testing of the software system, the product is ready for marketing.At the end of the thesis, problems with the converter, the application and market prospects of the converter were fully discussed. A plan for improving the product was also made.
