| The third generation mobile communication system has become more mature and commercial with the development of the mobile telecommunication technologies. Compared with the second generation system, 3G has the functionalities such as global roaming, open interface, diverse terminal and interconnection with sorts of networks.Wireless Application Protocol serves as open global standard which can be used in the communication between handhold digital terminal and computer applications. There is no doubt that it will become one of the key services driving the transition from 2G to 3G system.WAP consists of a series of protocols from 1.0 version to the latest version 2.0. WAP 2.0 version integrates XHTML, TCP/IP, HTTP 1.1 and transport security layer (TLS/SSL). It can make adaptation to different hardware environment and enable Web developer develop the client PC application themselves.This paper gives a brief review of the history and current development of WAP technology. The features, usage models and system architecture of WAP 1.x, WAP2.0 has been detailed discussed. The research focuses on the major methods to carry WAP services. In addition, protocol stack configuration and network architecture of CSD, GPRS, and CDMA network have been compared respectively. The conclusion is made by analysis and comparison of strengths and weaknesses in WAP solutions.Integration with upgrading solution for CDMA2000 1X network, to test the WAP gateway performance under CDMA2000 1X network, we designed an emulator client of mobile handset running on BREW platform.
