The development of precision-guided weapon is making great progress on infrared guidance technology. The most typical characteristic of infrared guidance is the gigantic quantity of the data which the system processed. Therefore, in the application domain of infrared guidance, real-time processing technology is the research focus. As we know, image processing with a great deal data also has following characteristics, the quantity of the data participate operation is gigantic, the data is used repeated, the algorithm is simple but regular, elements in image are all operated in the same way, the operation has the inherent parallelism, the correspondence needs high band width. These parts are the most consumes in the image processing system, and influence the speed of whole system. If these processes are operated real-timed, the performance of whole system will enhance greatly. The progress of VLSI technology provided the hardware foundation for the digital image real-time processing technology. The characteristic of FPGA (field programmable gate array) lead it extremely fit be used in image processing to complete some parallel processing tasks. The superiority of FPGA center is also manifest in ATR, especially its interior ESB played very vital role in the recognition process. In the first part of the paper digital image real-time processing based on the FPGA is introduced. The system selects the chip APEXEP20K200E which is developed by Altera as center component, and realized algorithm like median filter, morphological filter, convolution operation, and histogram statistics and so on. The second part of this paper introduced a method of realization of ATR. The author also analyzed the particular technology problems about the system.
