Today the scale of internet is expanding and many big traffic are appearing ,which result in the desire to the packet delivery capacity of router be higher. We hope the router not only can deliver packet simply but also can consider QOS,flow rebuild,defending congestion etc in disposal.In this paper, we first analyzed the architecture of high performance router. Based on it, we found that flow control techniques were more important when designing high performance router and it could directly affect the whole performance and the ratio of packet loss. Then through the analysis of the buffer structure of router we proposed the reference model of flow control in router and associated flow control mechanism. In this paper , we also analyzed the flow control techniques in NPSI specification ,introducing the implement of flow control in core router. In the end of this paper ,we made the simulation and analysis about cluster router in term of the development trend of high performance router.The main contributes in this paper as follow.(1) There were no many studies on flow control of router. So we summarized and compared the requirement of pas(?)routers.(2) We given the buffer structure of router. Based on it, we proposed that there was the overlap of different buffers. The best selection was to adopt different flow control mechanisms .we have given several reference schemes of flow control mechanism.(3) At last,we made the simulation and analysis about Flow control mechanism of cluster router,these researches will be valuable.In a word, this paper studied the flow control problem of high performance router, the results make for the further research and realization on the architecture of the next generation high performance router.
