In the global economic environment, Electronic Data Interchange (EDI) among enterprises becomes more and more frequently. The data exchanged includes both control system data and business data. Traditional EDI technologies have many shortages, such as complex data format, high cost in transmission, the great data quantity after information encoding, etc. They can't provide an automatic data integration platform for distributed heterogeneous systems. XML and web service technologies help to promote the smooth data interchange in distributed applications. However, single web service is too simple to meet the continuously changing of business demands. So there is a demand to integrate existing web services, and to meet the business requirements with adjusting the combination of web services. Therefore it leads to a problem of different web services integration in EDI system. To solve the problem described above, this paper analyses the disadvantages of traditional EDI technologies, the principle of web service and service-oriented concepts, etc. and then provides a service-oriented EDI model. This model is based on web service technology and service-oriented architecture. It can encapsulate the data integration functions of enterprises into web services. According to the specific business, It can complete the data integration among the distributed system by integrating the web services. This paper introduces service integration layer in hierarchical system architecture of service-oriented EDI model. So integration steps of web services can be controlled by integration service. Web services integration platform is the key part of service-oriented EDI model. The practical methods are presented for implementing two catalog services of application and transaction in web services integration platform. Emphasis is placed on web services integration and invoking approaches in the service-oriented EDI model.Based on the service-oriented EDI model, this paper presented an example of data integration system among enterprises. This example combines the special web services developed by the author and the third part web services. Through integrating these services, the data integration is carried out among the heterogeneous platforms. So the feasibility of service-oriented EDI model is proved. This work is the theory and practice base for implementing dynamic combined EDI system based on semantic web services.
