GIS has been used in forestry area for more than twenty years in China. With the driving of "Digital Earth" and "Digital Province", a lot of forestry departments have established forestry information systems based on GIS. However, because of trade policy and technology, the multi-source forestry Geo-information resources are distributed, complex, isolated and incompatible in the special systems. As a result, each of them became "isolated island of forestry information". It is difficult to share resources and implement interoperability, and meet the demand of the overall application based on Internet. But different forestry Geo-information systems have some basic common functions. If those basic functions can not be reused it will waste a lot of money and manpower resource. Now, XML Web Service technology brings much spark to the Geo-information application and there is no doubt that it will also make some contributions to the solution of those issuses we have mentioned above.This thesis puts emphasis on the study of the related theory and the key technology of GIS and Web Service. Then it proposes a framework of forestry Geo- information service system based on web service, designes and developes a subsystem of forestry information service platform in Fujian province, forestry Geo-information service system, based on the above framework. The thesis covers following parts:Firstly, after expatiating the problems existed in traditional GIS data and traditional mode for developing forestry GIS, the thesis studies the GIS related theory and key technology, including the applicated GIS and the methods of its implement, ComGIS, WebGIS implement technology and the present problems, then introduces Web Service to solve the issues.Secondly, the thesis researches the principle, the Architecture, and the key technology of the new distributed technology (Web Service), and expatiates the advantages and significance of web service for GIS, then proposes a framework of forestry Geo-information service system based on web service by refering to ISO/TC211 and OGC standards.Thirthly, with the support of the integrated platform of .NET and ArcGIS Server, the thesis designed and developmented Forestry Geo-information Web Services (FGWS). These services can meet the integrated demands of different users. The main services include map catalog service, map service, query service, thematic map service, etc.Finally, the thesis developed forestry Geo-information service system based on B/S mode by integrating FGWS in Intemet.The system implemented not only basic functions such as map browse functions (zoom in, zoom out, pan, etc.), but also active annotation...
