Determining the identity of a person is becoming critical in this information era. Biometrics or biological characteristic (fingerprints, iris, voice, etc) are being researched widely for identification of individuals. Among other biometrics characteristic, fingerprint features could be easily extracted, reliable and small in features size. These characteristics give possibility for the designers to implement fingerprint identification system in a platform with limited resources while maintaining the performance. Automatic Fingerprint Identification System (AFIS), a technology of fingerprint identification based on computer or high-powered MCU, is of convenience, high efficiency, security and reliability. It has been applied in many fields such as financial security, data encryption, electronic business etc. And will play a more important role in our life. At present, most of the fingerprint identification systems are based on PC while embedded fingerprint equipments are scarcely used because of the immature market and the difficulty of developing them. How to transplant the algorithm to the embedded hardware platform without losing their performance will be the design nodus of this kind of system. This dissertation is about the design and realization of AFIS. The system is composed of three modules: fingerprint capture module, fingerprint image processing module and man-machine interaction. Considering the request of the system and the modern technology, DSP TMS320VC5416 of TI company and single-chip machine (SCM) P89C58 of PHILIPS company are selected to structure the system as main processors. Moreover, both the cost and the quality are also considered. Based on the above hardware platform, this system achieves six main functions as following:(1) Hardware Design and realization of AFIS based on DSP and single-chip machine;(2) Gathering fingerprint image by Solid-State sensor FPS200 of Veridicom company;(3) Realizing the communication between DSP and single chip machine by host-port interface (HPI) in DSP;(4) The circuit design and realization of keyboard input and LCD display modules;(5) Debugging serial communication between AFIS and PC;...
